Where to see the Fairy Penguins

The best place to view Penguins is at Lillico Beach, a 17 min drive from Three Sisters. Visit the boardwalk at sunset to watch the fairy penguins make their way up the beach to their burrows. Volunteer guides help with information and spotting. Best time to view is between April and September.

Wings Wildlife Park

137 Winduss Road, Gunns Plains – (33 min – 30.7 km)

A great little family-owned wildlife park where you can really get to see a range of native animals up close and personal.

Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary

1892 Mole Creek Rd, Mole Creek – (1 hr 8 min – 89 km) 

Privately owned wildlife sanctuary that has 82 acres of natural habitat to wander around and enjoy with free ranging Kangaroos. Offers daily interactive guided tours. All admission fees are directed towards conservation and rehabilitation of animals.

Devils at Cradle

3950 Cradle Mountain Road, Cradle Mountain – (1hr 16 min – 78 km) 

A unique Tasmanian sanctuary and breeding facility for three of Tasmania’s threatened carnivorous marsupials; the Tasmanian Devil and the Spotted Tail and Eastern Quoll, day and night guided tours available.

Gunns Plains Cave

Gunns Plain Road (34 mins – 31 km)

Hidden beneath the picturesque farmland of Gunns Plains is a fascinating world of caves, sink holes and underground streams. Home to some of the largest limestone shawl formations in the Southern Hemisphere. 

Bush walks

There are many amazing mountain hikes in the Dial Ranges, which are located just 10 km from Penguin. There are four mountains to hike, Mt Dial, Mt Montgomery, Mt Gnomon and Mt Duncan, all with breathtaking views. Visit AllTrails for details

Ferndene State Reserve

A hidden gem, just 6 km drive from Penguin with good picnic facilities. A short walk through towering tree ferns and meandering creeks that lead you to old disused silver and copper mines.

Penguins Mountain Bike Park

207 Ironcliffe Road, Penguin (8 min – 6.4km)

The park features more than 6 km of XC single trail and man-made features in the centre of the old speedway featuring jumps, wall rides and skills park. It’s a good starting point for the longer and more challenging rides in to the Dial trails at the southern end of the park, including the famous Iron Tor trail and Montgomery Loop.

Emu Valley Rhododendron Gardens

55 Breffny Road, Romaine (28 min – 27 km)

A beautiful 11-hectare garden with over 24,000 varieties of rhododendrons and other flowering plants from around the world. There is also a café offering Devonshire teas and light lunches.

Leven Canyon

Is Tasmania’s deepest limestone ravine. From the carpark, an easy 20 minute will take you to a lookout 275 m above the canyon floor.

Our day trip recommendations

Day out around Penguin

Grab a coffee and pastry from the Penguin Pantry and explore the esplanade. Go for a bush walk in the Dial Ranges or Ferndene State Reserve. Lunch at the Penguin Brewery, swim at Preservation Bay. Dinner at Seasons by the Sea.

Day out – Mole Creek and Cradle Mountain

Visit the Mole Creek Caves in Mole Creek (1 hr 14 min – 77 km) then on to Cradle Mountain (1 hr 25 min – 82 km) for a scenic walk around Dove Lake, followed by lunch at Cradle Mountain Lodge.

Day out – Stanley

(1 hr 27 min – 87 km) Take the scenic route from Penguin through Sulphur Creek, Burnie, Wynyard and Table Cape to Boat Harbour Beach. Grab a coffee and a bite to eat from Seekers Bar and Café. Drive on to Stanley, walk or take the chairlift up the Nut, walk through Stanley historic village, lunch at the Stanley Pub. On your return, visit Blue Hills Honey and Dip Falls.

Day out – Launceston and Evandale

(1 hr 27 min – 127km) Visit Anvers Chocolate Factory in Latrobe and Ashgrove Cheese Farm on your way to Elizabeth Town. Drive to Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm for a sweet treat or beverage.  Continue on to Evandale for a walk around the historic town and have lunch at the Beer Garden. Drive on to Launceston for a walk around Cataract Gorge and dinner at Cataract on Patterson.

Day out – Devonport and Hawley Beach

(28 mins – 28 km) drive to Mersey Bluff to see the Lighthouse and do the coastal walk, visit Southern Wild Distillery and then on to Ghost Rock Vineyard for a leisurely lunch and then a walk on beautiful Hawley beach.
