Gunns Plains Cave
Gunns Plain Road – (34 mins – 31 km)
Hidden beneath the picturesque farmland of Gunns Plains is a fascinating world of caves, sink holes and underground streams. Home to some of the largest limestone shawl formations in the Southern Hemisphere.
Bush walks
There are many amazing mountain hikes in the Dial Ranges, which are located just 10 km from Penguin. There are four mountains to hike, Mt Dial, Mt Montgomery, Mt Gnomon and Mt Duncan, all with breathtaking views. Visit AllTrails for details
Ferndene State Reserve
A hidden gem, just 6 km drive from Penguin with good picnic facilities. A short walk through towering tree ferns and meandering creeks that lead you to old disused silver and copper mines.
Penguins Mountain Bike Park
207 Ironcliffe Road, Penguin (8 min – 6.4km)
The park features more than 6 km of XC single trail and man-made features in the centre of the old speedway featuring jumps, wall rides and skills park. It’s a good starting point for the longer and more challenging rides in to the Dial trails at the southern end of the park, including the famous Iron Tor trail and Montgomery Loop.
Emu Valley Rhododendron Gardens
55 Breffny Road, Romaine – (28 min – 27 km)
A beautiful 11-hectare garden with over 24,000 varieties of rhododendrons and other flowering plants from around the world. There is also a café offering Devonshire teas and light lunches.
Leven Canyon
42 kilometres from Ulverstone, Penguin Cradle Trail – (48 min – 47 km)
Is Tasmania’s deepest limestone ravine. From the carpark, an easy 20 minute will take you to a lookout 275 m above the canyon floor.
